Since the withdrawn of the EN 50107-3 the sign industry is suffering by the lack of a specific standard for the luminous signs. This has a negative effect also on the Code of Practice that needs an electrical standard as a basis for the installation of signs.
The CENELEC has considered the first issue of the 50107-3 in conflict with its internal rules, that’s why ESF has appointed their members to attend the CENELEC meeting held in Brussels on Nov. 14th 2025 in order to apply for a new standard through the National Technical Committees.
Under the permission of them, Ralph Hug (Electroswiss – CH), Marcus Thielen (VDE – Germany) and Fausto Martin (CEI – Italy) has brought the request to establish a new Technical Committee for preparing a new draft of the 50107-3 with the amendments requested by CENELEC.
In the first months of 2026 a preliminary draft has been completed; in the meantime 2 more representatives of National Committees have asked to participate (Austria and France) to the next meeting scheduled for next summer, to be held in Munich or Zurich. According to Villamoura Procedure, at least 5 countries shall require for a new standard, thus now the Working Group has the necessary number of members to proceed.
The common feeling is to reach the final target in the shorter possible time, preferably within the end of this year, in order to get a Final Draft for Approval very soon.
